am i right to think that you get xp debt or whetever in battle, and when you finish mission/end and go back to an outpost or a town, that debt disappears?

xp debt, no. You get a death penalty though, which affects your hp/mana and abilities until you return to an outpost or town. There are also items and shrines available that can reduce your DP while adventuring though. (candy canes, for example)

Nope no such thing as a xp debt. as pointed out above there is a death penalty that disappears once u enter a town/outpost. This is no way of losing xp in Gw. Even if u kill a load of things and then fail the mission and get returned to outpost u will still have all items u picked up and all xp u gained.

also you can get rid of DP(death penalty) by killing things before going back to town.
